It is time to look back on the Summer Reading Program “On Your Mark, Get Set READ” and “Get in the game, READ.” “On Your Mark, Get Set READ” was aimed at children birth through 12, and “Get in the game, READ” was for our young adults 13 years old and up, and Adults of any age. This year’s theme was reading and having fun with games. We celebrated the program with a reading challenge for young and old of 20 total hours of reading during the six weeks of the program. Many children, young adults and adults rose to the challenge and complete the task. All won prizes for having read. For those who fully finished the challenge, earned two free books to keep. The participants who made it at least half way, ten hours, earned a free book. Many had the great reward of reading for pleasure.

The Summer Reading Program had many events for all ages. There were games for the younger crowd featuring hula hoops, pool noodles, and Frisbees. The young adults had video and board gaming nights. The adults had a murder mystery dinner put on by the Young Adult Advisory Committee. There were special family fun events with Minute to Win It games, and outdoor games including a few water games in the hot summer weather. The events and reading challenge gave challenges to all ages and great fun for all.

The Summer Reading Program could not be possible without the help and support of the community and area businesses. Many businesses made great donations to the program. Some of the business the Savona Free Library would like to thank are:

And a special thank you to Tyrtle Beach Youth Fund for granting us funds to make the program possible.

The biggest thank you goes to the individuals who came and volunteered their time to make such a great program as the Summer Reading Program possible. Without our volunteers we could not encourage so many to continue reading for pleasure. Remember children, young adults, and adults who read have an easier time when going back to school and work. Thank you everyone for a great summer.

Goodbye Summer Reading, Hello New School Year
